Welcome to this week’s rendition of What Movie is That? For this week, I’ve chosen a movie that I enjoy, but most people are not to keen on and to be honest it is not the best movie in the world, but as I always say GIVE IT A CHANCE.
Back in 1993, a live-action version of one of the most popular Nintendo video games was released, Super Mario Bros: The Movie. This film was released in theaters on May 28, 1993. Super Mario Bros. was directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jenkins, and the screenplay was written by Parker Bennett, Terry Runte, and Ed Solomon.
This fabulous sci-fi fantasy adventure film stars:
- Bob Hoskins as Mario Mario
- John Leguizamo as Luigi Mario
- Dennis Hopper as King Koopa
- Samantha Mathis as Princess Daisy
Brooklyn plumbers Mario (Bob Hoskins) and Luigi (John Leguizamo) rescue Princess Daisy (Samantha Mathis) from King Koopa (Dennis Hopper) and the Goombas in a dinosaur world.
Soooooo this movie is quite unique to say the least. This film as you can imagine did not perform well in the theater. There was a lot of hope that it would do well, but sadly this particular live action film loosely based on a beloved video game did not meet audience expectation.
However, I am here to convince you that this film isn’t as horrible as it may seem. I will agree that it crazy and ridiculous and the folks who made this film did take some rather extreme liberties. I mean the Goombas.
They are so freaking weird looking, but they are also kinda cute. But I can’t say the same for their version of King Koopa….
My Thoughts on the Movie
This movie is insane, but I actually enjoy it. I love every insane, weird part of this movie. I mean the way in which the Mario Bros get to the Dinosaur world is kinda a crazy and the where do I even begin with that……
I honestly need to watch this movie again. It’s been so long. But the one thing I can say is that the casting in this film is actually pretty great. I mean BOB HOSKINS!!!!! This man is legendary. Also Dennis Hopper & John Leguizamo…. Each of these actors have starred in films that I love so naturally I was drawn to this one without hesitation. I don’t regret watching it one bit.
Is this movie bad? Well, I will let you be the judge of that. Honestly, take a leap and indulge in some nostalgia. Then watch the Honest Trailer. Also, I’m gonna help everyone out and just leave this here:
