Bookish Gifts for Your Holiday Needs

Not sure what gift to give the book and/or comics lover in your life?  Do you know somebody who doesn’t read much but you want to surprise them with the perfect book this year?  Never fear.  It’s December and I’m here to help with all your bookish gift-giving needs.

I’m sure it won’t come as a surprise that I tend to gift a lot of books to my loved ones during the holiday season.  I doubt my dad and sister would read any novels in a given year if it weren’t for the ones I force on them every Christmas.  Books make great gifts — just look at Iceland’s annual Jólabókaflóð, the tradition of gifting books the night before Christmas.  I challenge you to find anything cozier than curling up with a warm drink, a soft blanket, and a great book during the winter.

Here’s a roundup of some of my favorite lists and gift giving guides from all the bookish corners of the internet:

For the person who watches lots of movies, but doesn’t read much:

Like These Movies? Here Are 100+ Things You Might Also Like
This list might be a year and a half old, but it’s amazing and includes TV shows, video games and more in addition to books.  The recommendations for people who liked Interstellar and Ex Machina are particularly great.

33 Books You Should Read (or Gift) Now, Based On Your Favorite Films
This one’s a little more straight-forward. One to one: Like this movie, then read this book!

For the person whose to-be-read pile is taller than they are:

Retail Therapy for Booklovers
Yes, I’m including a list I made in this list.  Sometimes a person really doesn’t need another book, sometimes a person needs an awesome bookish tote bag, or comic book leggings, or Edgar Allen Poe socks.

The 2017 Modern Mrs Darcy Gift Guide for Book Lovers
This is really a comprehensive bookish gift giving guide, but I love it for all the great non-book items on it.  Who knew that a “book weight” was a thing? (Now that I know they exist, I NEED one.)

For the avid reader who needs only the most current gifts:

NPR’s 2017 Book Concierge
The mother of all year-end lists.  It has filters.  It features over 300 books and comics.  If you can’t select a book from this list that looks interesting, I can’t help you.

For the avid reader who won’t be happy with just one book:

Best Subscription Boxes for Book Lovers
Bookish subscription boxes are awesome.  This list is pretty comprehensive, but it’s missing two really cool ones: Afrofuture Books and the not-yet-fully-funded (but hopefully soon!) Rainbow Boxes.

For the comic book lover:

The AV Club’s Best Comics of 2017
One of my favorite year-end lists.  Anything from this list would make a solid gift-choice.

Paste’s 2017 Gift Guide for Comics Lovers
Slightly more superhero focused than the AV Club list, plus some awesome non-book choices.  Jen Bartel’s enamel pins are particularly badass.

For the coloring book fanatic, or the person who needs to de-stress:

Bookish Gift Guide: Coloring Book Edition
I didn’t think that I was a coloring book person, but then a friend gifted me a Ryan Gosling coloring book and I realized how wrong I’ve always been.

Go out and buy some books this holiday season.  The readers in your life will be grateful, I promise.
Until next time, find the stories that make you stronger. #WorkOutNerdOut
